Cross Amsterdam off the bucket list!

Many in the U.S. have probably not noticed that the government in The Netherlands shifted very firmly to the right recently. And as expected, the new government is formally stating its intention to block the sale of marijuana to non-residents in that country. Rather than reinvent the wheel, I encourage you to read the story below, from Toke of the Town. Steve Elliott does the job very eloquently:

There Goes An Industry: Dutch To Ban Cannabis Sales To Tourists

By Steve Elliott ~alapoet~

There goes the tourism industry.

In a hare-brained move, the new conservative government of the Netherlands said on Wednesday it plans to ban tourists from buying cannabis in its famed “coffee shops,” where hash and marijuana are legally sold. The shops have become a very popular attraction for travelers from other countries.

The new government, which took office last month, has agreed to limit the sale of cannabis to Dutch residents only, to curb supposed crime linked to its production and sale.

“No tourist attractions. We don’t like that,” said Ivo Opstelten, the Dutch minister for security and justice on Wednesday, reports Gilbert Kreijger of Reuters.

“The heart of the problem is crime and disturbances surrounding the sale,” Kreijger claimed. “We have to go back to what it was meant for: local use for those who would like it.”

One can’t help but wonder why cannabis sales to foreigners — which have been allowed for about 35 years in the Netherlands — is suddenly defined as a “problem,” when it has brought so much revenue to the country.

It’s hard to analyze the strategy behind banning the coffee shops, when people from all over the world visit the Netherlands solely because of them. But the new conservative Dutch government, busily looking for scapegoats for their societal ills, believes that cutting off foreigners from cannabis sales will somehow fix things.

Shop owners say the idea is unworkable, according to The Associated Press.

The Netherlands has for years had one of Europe’s most liberal soft drug policies, with its coffee shops, especially in Amsterdam and in border cities near Belgium and Germany, have been major sources of tourist cash.

But some cities near the Belgian border have cracked down on marijuana tourism, and the Dutch security minister on Wednesday confirmed a wider clampdown after coalition parties — comprising Labour, Christian Democrats and a small Christian party — agreed to push for a ban in September.

Amsterdam, which stands to lose a major tourist attraction, is already in the process of closing some of its 223 coffee shops, starting with those in the red light district to tackle “criminal activity” in the area, and is currently studying the government proposal.

“We are taking the current practice as a starting point,” an Amsterdam city spokesman said. “It is not perfect but in many ways we have a functioning coffee shop system.”

The government’s plan to ban tourists from the cannabis shops — whereby only holders of a resident’s pass would be allowed to buy hash and marijuana at them — has not yet been formally put into law, and no timetable has yet been proposed.

A spokesman for Opstelten said on Thursday that details of the plan are “uncertain,” and the minister will make a formal proposal sometime next year.

Personal possession of up to five grams (between an eighth-ounce and a quarter-ounce) of cannabis or hash is allowed in the Netherlands, but “large-scale production and transport” remains a crime.

Some Dutch border towns including Maastricht and Terneuzen have already banned cannabis sales to foreigners to “limit crime and disturbances” such as traffic jams.

Maastricht has the right to refuse foreigners entry to its coffee shops, the advocate-general of the European Court of Justice advised in July, giving support to the Dutch government’s nationwide ban if the court followed the advice.”

Marijuana Girl

Nice old book I found. It’s real. Yep.

Hey, sorry it’s been so long without a new article. I needed to take some time to focus on other things, but I’ll try to speed up the writing a bit on this subject. For now, enjoy this antiquated view on how marijuana impacts your life. The concept of marijuana madness…one of the greatest tricks played on this country. Ever.

AMAZING video!

You owe it to yourself to spend 3 and a half minutes watching this. No words, just simple animation and a deep message. Yeah, it’s a little simplistic. But this is actually a pretty simple issue. There’s a plant that grows wild in nature. It does a world of good, safely, and it’s illegal. Who benefits, I ask you? Think about it while you’re watching this video, and please spread this video as widely as you can. Mr. Obama, let’s end this cruel prohibition now. (yeah, like he’s reading MY blog; but it COULD happen!) :)

Show your support for marijuana legalization!

I’m working on getting cheaper options, but CafePress has allowed me to setup a store to sell t-shirts, hats, coffee-cups, etc. very easily. Please let me know what you think. Here’s the site address and pictures of some of the items. Note that I’ve created one design, available in black, soft green and white. At the CafePress site, just click on the design you want and the product you want and it will preview them together for you. If you see nothing on the product, you probably have selected a white design on a white/light product.

Every sale gives me a few dollars, which goes 100% to actual costs for The Plant Rant and the campaign to legalize marijuana in the United States.  I’d love to have your help!

Just a plant

A good friend referred me today to an interesting website, It’s Just a Plant:

http://www.itsjustaplant.com/

The site appears to be designed to showcase a CHILDREN’S book about marijuana. A good portion of the book is presented on the site, and it’s pretty good! I’m considering getting it for my 7 year old, but I’d have to check out the content that’s NOT shown first. The best part are the reviews for the book. Looks legitimate — I’m sure someone will tell me if it’s a hoax. But I love the statement this makes. My favorite review says it best:

“It doesn’t really matter whether It’s Just a Plant is what it seems to be — a highly earnest and enthusiastic children’s book about marijuana — or a shits-’n'-giggles hoax, or a self-aggrandizing attempt to shock the bourgeosie. It is what it is: A beautifully-illustrated, hilariously multee-cultee children’s book about the history, botany, (il)legality and potency of good old Mary Jane.”

I recommended that you go to this site and read what’s available of the story and take a look at the arrest statistics the author includes. Seems like he’s doing good work.

Thanks for the find, Cleveland Bob. Hey guys, you might also want to check out HIS blog. It’s at http://boozeland.blogspot.com/.

Bad site, good lesson

I found a great site today. It actually is a HORRIBLY designed site packed with erroneous and unsupported claims, but it’s great because it gives us a great chance to see how the misinformation campaign waged on drugs in this country has permeated our view of marijuana. I’d like to make a few points about this article:

1.) Who wrote it? I only take seriously authors that are willing to be contacted regarding their work.

2.) Where is the bibliography? No references, just claims. This is a typical sign of propaganda on BOTH sides of the issue. Whether I agree with you or not, you’d better have a good grasp of the available science or I’ll assume your spouting opinion and not fact

3.) The first article claims ‘marihuana’ is extremely dangerous as medical scientist clearly know (not supported by facts) [btw: when you spot the word ‘mariHuana’ with an H instead of a J, you are most frequently looking at marijuana information that has come directly from anti-marijuana interests. Not sure why, but it seems to be true. Maybe someone can explain why in the comments?

4.) The second article claims that medical professionals see the drug as ‘manna’, or something of great value and greatly needed

5.) Just having ‘Harvard’ in the address, even though this site exists in a forgotten orphan location on the server, will give these articles credibility; this may explain why this article was the FIRST PAGE of Google results when I did a marijuana related search.

PLEASE question what you read, here and everywhere. We don’t know everything we need to know yet about marijuana. We clearly know enough to make some positive changes for this country, but it’s important that we stay open-minded and inquisitive. After several thousand years of use, chances are this plant is one of the safest substances on the planet, as I believe. But we might learn with PROPER levels of scientific research that there’s a dark side we haven’t understood. We might also learn that there are benefits not yet even considered. Either way, I ask you to be critical in your thinking and keep learning. The brain: use it or lose it.

Welcome to the Plant Rant!

Hi everyone. I’m a cancer survivor that has been helped immeasurably by marijuana. (Read more about my story and the origins of this blog in the About this Blog section.) Unfortunately, it’s illegal to use marijuana in most states, and federally it remains a crime. I began my experience with marijuana with the assumption that there is a good reason for these laws. I now know there is not, but there are extremely well-established and powerful forces determined to keep them at the status quo. Marijuana (or pot, weed, grass, ganja, maryjane, etc.) is safer than many human-made medicines, with thousands of years of history reinforcing the point.

Comparing pot to alcohol, which is cheap and freely available throughout the country, the stupidity of our marijuana prohibition in this country becomes clear. (Alcohol is more dangerous, kills thousands of people, hurts people in very clear and demonstrable ways.) However, legalization of marijuana is considered political suicide because of the massive amounts of money tied up in prohibition (law enforcement and prisons mostly). In late 2010, The Netherlands, which has legalized the adult use of this plant, announced that they are closing 8 prisons due to LACK of crowding. Compare that to the United States of America with it’s bulging, gleaming prisons. But in terms of overall economic benefit and certainly for compassionate reasons, the majority of experts believe it’s time to legalize this wonderful plant across the U.S.

So I guess that makes me an activist. But there are SO many sites out there with information on this subject, and so many organizations dedicated to making marijuana legal and even to educating you on it’s use or benefits. So why did I start the Plant Rant? Simple. I have found over the past several months of chemotherapy that many people with medical issues could benefit from pot but are hesitant to use it because of the social taboo against it. I want to help destroy this taboo in my lifetime.

In Southern California, we are fortunate to have (state and local) legal access to this wonderful plant, and yet I still have friends with anxiety problems, chronic pain, Parkinson’s, cancer, and other maladies who are afraid to ‘do drugs’ like pot although they “do” dangerous pharmaceuticals on a daily basis. When I’ve encountered such ones, I’ve explained to them how easy it is to help themselves and they’ve quickly and smoothly gotten significant help. I want to do that as many times as possible.

So there’s my motivation, in case you were curious. Using this site will be easy. I’ll maintain pages (up there at the top left in the Getting Started section!) helping interested readers get educated easily, and I’ll occasionally post articles referring readers to subjects of interest. I’m not going to try to re-create the wheel here. If I find the info elsewhere, I’ll be linking heavily to it with full credit. Because this is a community effort. I’m just throwing my time into the mix because it’s a cause worth focusing on. Imagine the amount of pain that could be erased with this simple plant. I do imagine this better world, and I’m going to help make it a reality.

Enjoy the content, and please leave comments to let me know what you think. This site will be so much richer with your contribution.

I do my absolute best to give full credit to copyright owners when I incorporate content from other sources. If I’ve used your content in a way that does not meet your standards, just let me know so that I can correct the mistake immediately.

One final note: marijuana “culture” on the web is largely dominated by young people, so if you’re a bit older like me, you may encounter something of a culture clash. This is part of what I want to introduce to you so that you’re comfortable and not intimidated as you learn. Also, many good resources are available on websites that feature content that may not be ideal for some. My goal is to maintain a safe and inclusive environment here, one that encourages education. Occasionally when I link you out to other sites, you may see very strong language, scantily clad girls smoking marijuana, or other ‘R-rated’ content. I will not purposefully link to anything involving full nudity or sexual acts but we all have different standards as to what’s offensive. It’s important to realize that good information comes in different packages! I’ll try to keep it as ‘clean’ as possible while still introducing you to the world of marijuana as it is today.

Please, as always, allow me to help personally if needed.
