Cross Amsterdam off the bucket list!

Many in the U.S. have probably not noticed that the government in The Netherlands shifted very firmly to the right recently. And as expected, the new government is formally stating its intention to block the sale of marijuana to non-residents in that country. Rather than reinvent the wheel, I encourage you to read the story below, from Toke of the Town. Steve Elliott does the job very eloquently:

There Goes An Industry: Dutch To Ban Cannabis Sales To Tourists

By Steve Elliott ~alapoet~

There goes the tourism industry.

In a hare-brained move, the new conservative government of the Netherlands said on Wednesday it plans to ban tourists from buying cannabis in its famed “coffee shops,” where hash and marijuana are legally sold. The shops have become a very popular attraction for travelers from other countries.

The new government, which took office last month, has agreed to limit the sale of cannabis to Dutch residents only, to curb supposed crime linked to its production and sale.

“No tourist attractions. We don’t like that,” said Ivo Opstelten, the Dutch minister for security and justice on Wednesday, reports Gilbert Kreijger of Reuters.

“The heart of the problem is crime and disturbances surrounding the sale,” Kreijger claimed. “We have to go back to what it was meant for: local use for those who would like it.”

One can’t help but wonder why cannabis sales to foreigners — which have been allowed for about 35 years in the Netherlands — is suddenly defined as a “problem,” when it has brought so much revenue to the country.

It’s hard to analyze the strategy behind banning the coffee shops, when people from all over the world visit the Netherlands solely because of them. But the new conservative Dutch government, busily looking for scapegoats for their societal ills, believes that cutting off foreigners from cannabis sales will somehow fix things.

Shop owners say the idea is unworkable, according to The Associated Press.

The Netherlands has for years had one of Europe’s most liberal soft drug policies, with its coffee shops, especially in Amsterdam and in border cities near Belgium and Germany, have been major sources of tourist cash.

But some cities near the Belgian border have cracked down on marijuana tourism, and the Dutch security minister on Wednesday confirmed a wider clampdown after coalition parties — comprising Labour, Christian Democrats and a small Christian party — agreed to push for a ban in September.

Amsterdam, which stands to lose a major tourist attraction, is already in the process of closing some of its 223 coffee shops, starting with those in the red light district to tackle “criminal activity” in the area, and is currently studying the government proposal.

“We are taking the current practice as a starting point,” an Amsterdam city spokesman said. “It is not perfect but in many ways we have a functioning coffee shop system.”

The government’s plan to ban tourists from the cannabis shops — whereby only holders of a resident’s pass would be allowed to buy hash and marijuana at them — has not yet been formally put into law, and no timetable has yet been proposed.

A spokesman for Opstelten said on Thursday that details of the plan are “uncertain,” and the minister will make a formal proposal sometime next year.

Personal possession of up to five grams (between an eighth-ounce and a quarter-ounce) of cannabis or hash is allowed in the Netherlands, but “large-scale production and transport” remains a crime.

Some Dutch border towns including Maastricht and Terneuzen have already banned cannabis sales to foreigners to “limit crime and disturbances” such as traffic jams.

Maastricht has the right to refuse foreigners entry to its coffee shops, the advocate-general of the European Court of Justice advised in July, giving support to the Dutch government’s nationwide ban if the court followed the advice.”

Law Enforcement Says Yes on 19

NORML, as they have since the 70s, is leading the charge on political efforts in support of cannabis legalization. Here’s the latest that drew my attention. A good, no-nonsense endorsement from a career cop. Good stuff.

Yes On Prop. 19 Campaign Releases TV Advertisement
October 25th, 2010 By: Paul Armentano, NORML Deputy Director

The campaign to pass Proposition 19, the California ballot measure to legalize the private adult use and cultivation of cannabis, released a television ad today featuring former San Jose police chief Joseph McNamara, who makes a strong public safety case for ending the current prohibition laws.

Says McNamara in the ad (view below):”Let’s be honest: The war against marijuana has failed. I know from 35 years in law enforcement. Today, it’s easier for a teenager to buy pot than beer. Proposition 19 will tax and control marijuana just like alcohol. It will generate billions of dollars for local communities, allow police to focus on violent crimes, and put drug cartels out of business. Join me and many others in law enforcement. Vote YES on Proposition 19!”

McNamara served as San Jose’s chief of police for 15 years.

The ad begins airing on televisions stations throughout California, with a specific emphasis on southern California, tomorrow. (Interested parties who wish to donate to the ad campaign can do so by going here.)

McNamara also has a commentary on today’s Huffington Post, which you can read here:

Let’s Be Honest: The War Against Marijuana Has Failed

[Excerpt] For 70 years, we have prohibited marijuana in this country, each day expecting different results. But as William F. Buckley once said: “Even if one takes every reefer madness allegation of the prohibitionists at face value, marijuana prohibition has done far more harm to far more people than marijuana ever could.”

We spend hundreds of millions of dollars every year arresting people for marijuana possession, sending them to trial, and incarcerating small-time offenders.

And yet, despite our war against it, marijuana is so freely available that anyone who wants it in California can get it.

… On my watch as police chief in San Jose, the city was named the safest large city in the country, despite having the fewest police per capita. That’s because we policed intelligently. And between smart policing and sound policy we can make our streets safe, instead of paying lip service to the failing war on marijuana.

California cannot afford to continue the same failed policies of the past. … That’s why I am asking you to join me and many others in law enforcement by voting YES on Proposition 19.

Thank You, Governor Schwarzenegger!

Good, short article that sums up what the Governor’s signing means for marijuana freedom:

AMAZING video!

You owe it to yourself to spend 3 and a half minutes watching this. No words, just simple animation and a deep message. Yeah, it’s a little simplistic. But this is actually a pretty simple issue. There’s a plant that grows wild in nature. It does a world of good, safely, and it’s illegal. Who benefits, I ask you? Think about it while you’re watching this video, and please spread this video as widely as you can. Mr. Obama, let’s end this cruel prohibition now. (yeah, like he’s reading MY blog; but it COULD happen!) :)

Patent on OG Kush?

So the Patent Office started taking patent applications for marijuana-related items, but then lost their nerve:

Big Pharma: Just the Facts

Are we not clear on WHY pot is illegal? Let’s recap. Over 2 BILLION dollars per year pays for jobs (law enforcement primarily) that exist for the sole purpose of stopping marijuana use. The politicians who can change this would be crucified if they cut these jobs, but they COULD redirect the jobs toward hard drugs or other valid concerns. So why not? Because they are lobbied heavily and successfully by corporate interests (i.e. they get PAYOFFS under various guises), most notably from Big Pharma. Check out this AWESOME info from onlineschools.org.

When Cops Kill

Las Vegas police recently killed a man. He was a recreational marijuana user, with no criminal record. He had a college degree and a white-collar job. His girlfriend was 8 and a half months pregnant with their first son. These cops burst into his home, forced his pregnant girlfriend to kneel at gunpoint, and then shot him dead in the bathroom. There are multiple sides to the story, of course, but ask yourself what YOU would do if a gang of armed men burst into your house.

This disgusts me. Read the full story HERE at stopthedrugwar.org so that you know how your tax dollars are being spent. Brutality.

San Diego MMIC Help

Here’s the link to the official M.M.I.C info from San Diego County. One of my local grower friends pointed out that I’ve talked about doctor’s recommendations, but not this ‘official’ card that costs about $170 but protects you more than a doctor’s recommendation within San Diego. I’ll integrate into the Getting Started articles at some point, but in the meantime, enjoy the bureaucratic version:

Nice find, Von! Thanks for sending it over.

NPR Misses the Point on Pot

I just read an NPR article entitled ’The New Marijuana’: Where Do We Blow From Here?”, by Philip Bruce. I love those guys, but someone should tell them the real story is in the fact that their ARTICLE PHOTO is wrong. Picky detail or right to the heart of the issue? You decide:

See that Rx paper? In fact, you CANNOT get a doctor’s prescription (only a ‘recommendation’ as briefly noted in passing). Why? Because the federal government considers marijuana *MORE DANGEROUS* than the oxycontin, vicodin, morphine, etc. that are flooding our streets. These lethal poisons can be prescribed by any medical doctor.

But *not* the cannabis PLANT.

Are you picking up what I’m laying down here, friends?

NPR’s full story, by the way, is at: http://www.npr.org/templates/story/story.php?storyId=127369519

Honestly though, it’s only useful as a very  high-level overview of the legalization effort in California. If you really want to know what’s happening in this civil rights battle (yes, I said it), click on the NORML link on this page (see it over there on the left?) and go spend a few minutes getting educated. The so-called “marijuana culture” or “cannabis culture” is an amazing world that a lot of people in this country are completely missing because they have bought into the marijuana taboo. This site is dedicated (as am I) to challenging this taboo and ensuring our children live in a more compassionate world.

Sorry. I have to get ornery with a few of you here. I don’t mean to be rude and pushy; really that’s not what this is about. I’m not trying to convert anyone. Believe what you want! Be happy!

But, guys, real people are suffering RIGHT NOW. Millions of people are hurting in the U.S. because of a failed U.S. drug policy and the lack of political will and integrity to make the necessary changes. How well do you know the facts on this issue? We all know what it takes to make real change. Marijuana will be available to relieve suffering in this country when enough of us get off our butts and start educating ourselves and getting involved.

Still here? Cool. Look, people I love very much went through misery and are GOING through misery because too many of you are going to read this article and move on without making a change in mind or action. People YOU love may face pain and nausea and tremors and, frankly, levels of torment most of you cannot imagine.

Against that backdrop let me paint you a simple picture. I can pick the flowers off this plant, dry them, blow hot air across them, breath the vapor (NOT smoke) and have INSTANT relief from suffering. This plant has a several-thousand-year recorded history of being safely used with clear benefits. Do you disagree? Superb! Go research this and prove me wrong.

:)

Do you agree? I’m curious about what you want to contribute. In the comments below, if you’re one of the rare people willing to speak publicly. But if not, that’s ok! (Our culture is so anti-marijuana that it’s understandable why you’d want to be private about this!) Just drop me a message by using the Contact link up above on the right. It sends me a direct and private email.

Will you call your representatives? Start reading relevant news articles? Read every article on this site? (sorry, I couldn’t resist throwing that in!). Donate to NORML? I can’t wait to hear your plans!

Ah well…I got off on a bit of a rant there. But the site IS called THE PLANT RANT, so I guess I can be forgiven.

Wishing you each safety, peace and happiness. Stay well, friends!
